High-stability, Current-controlled, Card-based, Unipolar, Switch-mode Power Converter for Electromagnets |
Overview
The power converter is capable of delivering output voltage (up to 50 V DC), output current (up to 15 A DC), and output power (up to 300 W) ratings with minimum alterations. It operates from 230 V, 50 Hz ac mains. The power converter is developed on a single 6U double-sided PTH PCB, complete with power circuit, control electronics and interface electronics for its remote operation. It is equipped with precision current sensor, electronics and on-board constant-temperature bath that provides output current stability within +/- 100 ppm of the full-scale current (for 8 hours after 1 hour of warm-up). Further, a controlled electromechanical switch is provided at the output that facilitates the output polarity reversal. Important signals are available on the front panel facilitating in-situ diagnosis/monitoring of the operational status.

PROCESS
So far 80 units have already been produced and qualified in an industry at different times. Since it is a single-board design, the manufacturing process is industry-friendly. Special manufacturing infrastructure / environment / processes are not required. Standard PCB production, assembly, winding and testing techniques are applicable. All components are normal through-hole component and are available in Indian market.

FACILITIES REQUIRED
Standard facilities available with a manufacturer of electronic systems such as PCB manufacturing, component soldering, standard mechanical shop floor for assembly etc. are necessary for production. Some of the items (e.g. magnetic components, heatsinks etc.) can also be sub-contracted by the industry if the related infrastructure is not available under the same roof. However, the manufacturer desirous of acquiring the technology should have a complete in-house board assembly facility following IPC 610. Standard test and measurement equipment (meters, oscilloscopes etc.) are sufficient. Various sources of precision meters and sensors are commercially available for the manufacturer to augment the infrastructure.
